As I mentioned on social media, I have ALWAYS struggled with exercise and trying to stay in shape. I hear so many people talk about how they love it and honestly, I just don't. The only thing I actually enjoy is when it's finished:) However, I know at my age (52) it is SO important if I want to live a long and healthy life as I age.
Over the years I have started trying to exercise in my home gym and running around my neighborhood. I might sustain it for a few months but then I get busy and just stop doing it. Like I said, I don't enjoy it, so it's easy to let it go when I have too much going on.
As we age, one of the side-effects of not being physically active is not having much energy, having random body-aches and pains and, for me, blood tests starting to show some serious issues with cholesterol. The trend for a couple years has consistently been that I will have to start medication soon and ultimately face some serious heart issues if I don't become consistently better with my exercise and what I eat.
So, what to do?
After another discouraging blood test 2 months ago, I realized that if I kept trying to do this alone, I was going to fail. With this in mind, I reached out to a friend and took 2 steps that have made all the difference.
- Commit -My friend Drew, runs a dad health company called Epic Dad Fit which provides a simple food/exercise plan and more importantly, accountability with some other dads. I asked Drew if I could join, paid the fee and committed to the process of Epic Dad Fit. I knew that without making this tangible commitment, there is no way I was going to grow in this area.
- Submit - Once I committed to the process, I had to submit fully to it. This means I had to be humble enough to be honest about my challenges with a group of dads and then make real changes to what I eat and how often I exercise. I also had to submit to logging my food and workouts, checking in morning and night and filling out a weekly report. These steps are the most important for me, because I NEED accountability to grow in this area.
The results so far?
Lost 10 pounds, gained 14 pounds of muscle, lost 3 pounds of fat and feeling far better with more energy.
The reason?
Committing and Submitting to the necessary steps to get better. I hope you will take the same steps in whatever area you need to get better!
